Urenlang. Veel later, tijdens mijn jaren op de AVBV kwam de fotografie erbij en ontstond mijn liefde voor taal. Binnen de muren van mijn atelier zijn dat de disciplines waarbinnen ik werk. Met verf en verbeelding kun je nieuwe werelden oproepen. Als een beeld niet de werkelijkheid kan zijn, dan is het gewoon een andere werkelijkheid. Dit geldt ook voor de&nbsp;fotografische beelden. Het gaat om het verhaal dat ze vertellen, vaak in combinatie met andere beelden en taal. De stap naar het maken van boeken is dan een hele logische. Alles start met een onbevangen blik. Door gelaagdheid ontstaat een ruimte die natuurlijk aandoet, maar is het een landschap zoals ik ze al ken? Er verschijnt een wezen, of in elk geval iets wat daarvoor door kan gaan. Het heeft iets weg heeft van een mens, maar dan eentje die kan vliegen.Alle werken zijn gemaakt met acrylinkt, pen, potlood en krijt op zwaar papier waar een groot percentage katoen in zit. Dit maakt dat de inkt prachtig vloeit. &nbsp; &nbsp; Een selectie van de tekeningen laat ik op hoge resolutie inscannen zodat er prints van kunnen worden gemaakt in verschillende formaten en op prachtig zwaar papier. Elke print wordt gesigneerd, met zorg verpakt en binnen twee weken verzonden. ontwerper Amanda Butterworth al enkele jaren boeken in eigen beheer. Wat begon als een gedeelde fascinatie voor beeld, verhaal en vorm, groeide uit tot meerdere publicaties. De tweede editie (Engelse versie) van ons eerste boek, Collective Memory (2017), verscheen in een oplage van 250 exemplaren en is inmiddels volledig uitverkocht. In respectievelijk &nbsp;2018 en 2023 verschenen The Narratee en Gaze. Eind 2025 werd Witte stippen op de flanken&nbsp;toegevoegd aan de reeks uitgaven. Voor dit boek tekende ik zelf voor concept, beeld en uitvoering. In the collages, petals have legs of a rabbit, a young girl is dressed in black mountains, a crow becomes a man, and deep shadows fall onto faded walls. "Vele visies op een plots verdwenen meisje", says a newspaper title next to the collages – "Many visions of a missing girl." In Saskia Overzee’s images, darkness becomes layered with memories, vanishing moments and presence of the inevitable, the death. Melancholy surrounds the poesy of dead animals and the delicacy of newborn petals. Photographs melt into drawings and paintings to become collages. .........Even though painting with physical paints has been in minor role during the recent years, Overzee paints digitally with photography and collage, and combines and contradicts the images with words for another layer and support for the image. This non-linear book called Collective Memory is about the shared pool of knowledge and information in the memories of two or more members of a social group, passed from one generation to the next. It parallels the memory of a person who is better at recalling images than words. The book is bound with a removable elastic band. This way the reader can play a part and make his or hers own story, by re-arranging the page's. Last year Saskia and Amanda simultaneously found a box “in the attic”. Saskia encountered a box filled with postcards, letters, slides and pictures from her dad Jan who died in 2017. Amanda found a box filled with slides, logbooks and snapshots of unfamiliar faces from her dad Brian who died in 1994 when she was only 14 years old. Saskia had her father around for a long time, Amanda one the other hand for a short time. Still both knew so little about the time before they were born. What was he like? What did he do? We both remember fragments of stories and with all that material we started to make A story. THE story remains unknown.The publication consists of two untold stories and thus two books that can be read simultaneously. But all this: both option A and strategy B, both fundamentally and in detail, have already taken place. Somewhere, some time and more than once. This street, this lamp post, and this drugstore [1], now closed, because the whole area is to be demolished. With the figure acting as a surrogate for the viewer, one is able to see nature’s sublimity vicariously through their eyes. But nature’s beauty is by no means confined to the exceptional. It’s waiting to be discovered in the most unexpected and delightful of places, deserved of our precious attention. There’s endless fascination hidden beneath the surface and as we open up our senses, it’s revealed to us when the pages are torn open. When this act is executed with care and patience it will give the book a new character and a beautiful tactile edge.Background storyThe ‘Ruckenfigur’ in the photos is Saskia’s mother and were taken by her father whilst hiking. Only recently and when seeing the images together did we realise how powerfull they are as a series. How Saskia’s parents enjoyed and appreciated nature effected the way Saskia looks at nature and how she inspires me to look.
